Royal recognition for Cathedral stonemasons

Three of Exeter Cathedral’s stonemasons have been singled out for praise, with special commendations from the Worshipful Company of Masons as part of the Duke of Gloucester’s Award scheme.

Anna Steinmetzer, Matthew Hoskins and Owen Whitfield were given the honour for their work on the exterior of the chapel of St Edmund to the west of the Cathedral, which was completed last autumn. The trio were praised both for their teamwork and for the breadth and quality of their individual work.

The awards were introduced in 2007 in honour of HRH The Duke of Gloucester who, through his architectural background, has a keen interest in the construction industry, the national heritage and in the training of craftsman. The presentation by William Gloyn (Master of the Worshipful Company of Masons) took place at a special service of Choral Evensong in the Cathedral last month.

Chris Sampson, Clerk of the Works and himself a Master Mason has overseen the re-establishment of the team of stonemasons at the Cathedral, who are responsible for the maintenance of the Exeter’s most iconic building. He said:

“The fact that the quality and expertise of the work our team has delivered within this project even got consideration for this national, industry-wide award is in itself  an achievement.”

“Our team have shown great dedication and commitment to the work that is need on the Cathedral I am immensely proud of them and all the Cathedral works department members who have contributed to this success.”
                       
The Worshipful Company of Masons is one of the ancient Livery Companies of the City of London with roots dating back to medieval times. The Company continues to support the craft of stonemasonry and in particular the training and education of the next generation of craftsmen and women. An education project with local schools (supported by funds from the WCOM) began at Exeter Cathedral in the autumn of 2015.
