Local housing developer helps in the fight to save lives

Exeter Eagles BMX Club welcomes a new defibrillator thanks to a generous donation from award-winning housing developer, Burrington Estates New Homes.

The volunteer-run BMX club based in Marsh Barton, Exeter holds race events throughout the year with up to 200 riders competing on race days. The club is a hub for the local community, welcoming over 9000 visitors a year.

The donation from Burrington Estates means the club can offer further assistance and peace of mind to the riders and spectators at the club. Heart health is extremely important to the Exeter Eagles with club member Caleb Criasia living with a life-threatening congenital heart defect known as Tetralogy of Fallot. Caleb, now age 9, had open heart surgery just months after he was born.

Grace Criasia, Caleb’s mother was told that Caleb would not be able to take part in competitive sports, however, there was no official guidance as to whether BMX riding was harmful to his condition. Grace said: “Caleb loves BMXing and we wanted to give him the opportunity to do something he’s passionate about. We monitored him extremely closely during his time at the track and we spoke with Caleb’s doctor who was happy that his heart remained healthy and he said to keep on doing what he’s doing! We’re therefore extremely grateful to Burrington Estates for their generous donation as it means so much to us, we honestly can’t thank them enough.”

Studies show that one heart attack happens every seven minutes and with Exeter Eagles attracting thousands of visitors a year, the club is keen to ensure that the facilities keep audiences and riders safe.

Grayham Tucker, Commercial Director for Burrington Estates New Homes said: “We’re delighted to donate a defibrillator to the Exeter Eagles. This essential piece of life-saving equipment for the riders and visitors to the club is vital in helping save lives. I personally attend the club with my daughter who is an Eagles rider, and as a parent, it’s reassuring knowing that if someone needs resuscitation, it’s available without delay. On behalf of the team at Burrington Estates New Homes, we also wish Caleb the very best and look forward to hearing about his achievements.”

Caleb’s heart condition continues to be monitored and he is scheduled for future surgery to repair a leaking valve. He does, however, continue to live life to the fullest and looks forward to his races at the Exeter Eagles BMX Club.
