Devon business helps Olympic Legacy live on

Just over one year on from the Olympics, Aspects Pools, a local swimming pool provider, is doing their bit to carry on the Olympic legacy. The Devon-based outfit has just completed an innovative competition for the British Water Polo Community.

The competition challenged water polo teams to reach out to their local communities, and raise awareness of the sport. Teams had to encourage local people to nominate them to win a £1500 contribution – paid in full by Aspect Pools – to their British National League entry fees: there were over 1500 entries, and British Water polo League Division 1 team Bristol Central were the lucky winners.

Bristol’s director of water polo and club chairman John Sissons said: “Bristol Central is delighted to have won this substantial prize to help pay towards the British League entry costs which are over £3,000 per season. It is expensive to play the game, because of travel, accommodation and fees, so this financial assistance is an absolutely fabulous prize for us to win”

At London 2012 a British Water Polo Team competed in the Olympics for the first time since 1956, leading to a new wave of participation for the minority sport here in the UK.

Dan Johnson of Aspects Pools said: “We all watched in awe as London took centre stage last summer. We want to help the Olympic legacy live on beyond those two weeks of sporting activity by building awareness of water-based activity such as water polo, which is a fitting way for a swimming pool and equipment business to support the Olympic legacy for future generations.”

At grass roots level the legacy lives on, with participation levels on the increase in certain areas. A point made by Bristol’s mini-polo and cadet programme lead coach and Great Britain Olympic captain, Craig Figes:

“We’ve invested heavily very recently, into developing our mini polo and cadet scheme, with over 100 children – boys and girls – training under our clubs programme which only began July 2012. This prize helps us maintain our standing at the top and allows these kids to see what can be achieved if you work hard, be disciplined in your sport, and have fun too!”

Aspects Pools has been trading in swimming pool market for over 30 years, providing all things related to swimming pools in the UK since 1983.
