The Co-operative Bank has given £200 to Kenyan Educational Sponsorship community group which is dedicated to helping young people in Kenya achieve their academic potential, enabling them to realise their ambitions and make the most of their lives. They are currently sponsoring three bright but extremely poor students Marcy, Alfred and Vivian.

Thie £200 donation from Co-operative Bank’s Customer Donation Fund will help support these three academically talented students who come from impoverished village communities in Kenya.

Kenyan Educational Sponsorship will support these students through their four years of High School to enable them to go on to University to study Engineering or Medicine.

The Sponsorship will be used to pay the students school fees plus any additional relevant costs such as school uniform and books.

Rev Kelvin Russell of the group, said: “These students have known hardship and now have this one chance to make something of their lives, this makes them work extremely hard at their studies.

"I have no doubt they will succeed and this will be a source of great encouragement to other youngsters from their rural communities.

"In 2020 I was privileged to travel to Kenya and work for two months in an impoverished region in the north of the country.

"I experienced first hand the many talented but poor students who were forced to leave school due to a lack of fund.

"During this time I realised that it is through education that students like Mercy, Alfred and Vivian will be able to lift themselves out of poverty and support their communities.

“We are really appreciative of support from organisations such as The Co-operative Bank. This donation is a great boost to our fundraising.”

Catherine Douglas, Managing Director of SME Banking at The Co-operative Bank said: “It’s great that our Customer Donation Fund enables us to give money to organisations like Kenyan Educational Sponsorship who make a difference to their community.”
