Hundreds of men braved the plunging temperatures and snow flurries on Saturday to step it out in Hospiscare’s Men’s Walk 2018. Some 900 men – 250 more than last year – signed up for the challenge, making it Hospiscare’s most successful Men’s Walk ever.

Temperatures may have been low but spirits were high as the walkers set off from the Double Locks pub, while along the route they were buoyed by the enthusiastic support and encouragement of a team of stalwart volunteers. On return to the pub they settled down with a pasty and a pint to watch Ireland beat England to achieve the grand slam in the Six Nations rugby tournament.

Organiser Sharon Ewart said: “This year’s Men’s Walk has been our biggest and best yet, and we’re confident that the total raised will far exceed last year’s. It will be a massive boost for Hospiscare, enabling us to carry on giving our patients the personalised care they need and deserve – we are so grateful to all our walkers, and of course our hardy volunteers, for their efforts.

“We’d also like to thank our generous sponsors who have once again given us tremendous support: headline sponsors Wilkinson Grant & Co; The Exeter Brewery Ltd, who provided the pints; Stalite Signs Ltd, who supplied promotional materials for the event; and the Pi Society. Our thanks also go to Chunk of Devon, who provided the delicious pasties that helped warm up our walkers on their return.

“As in past years, there was tremendous camaraderie and lots of smiling faces even as the snow came down, but I think our walkers were glad to get back to the pub. We’ll be hoping for better weather for next year’s walk!”

Hospiscare provides specialist care for adults with any kind of terminal illness, and support for their carers and families in Exeter, Mid and East Devon.  A gift to Hospiscare in your Will helps to ensure the future of the charity for generations to come.
