Music Therapy in our Community

Music therapy is the use of music as an essentially social and communicative activity to try and enhance behavioural and emotional outcomes. Music Therapists work with a variety of people in a variety of settings but at the core of their approach lies the therapeutic relationship between therapist and client.

One local charity using Music Therapy to enhance the lives of children in our community here in Devon is Honeylands Children’s Centre. The Music Therapy team at Honeylands work with around 100 children who either find language difficult or impossible. For the children who attend, music therapy provides them with a vital outlay and gives them an opportunity to develop social and communicative skills.

Having been given the opportunity to visit the centre our team were able to witness first-hand the remarkable work achieved at Honeylands. It was amazing to see the transformative power of music in sessions with parents and their children. For many, music therapy helped to bring on behaviours in their children which were only witnessed in the presence of music. This development is vital for children who struggle to do so in conventional ways.

At Paritor, we have been delighted to work closely with Honeylands as our charity of the year in 2013. Over the last 12 months we have helped Honeylands in a variety of ways, from organising fundraising events to supporting their in-house team to develop their social media presence. The journey has been an enjoyable one and we’ve learnt a lot in the process.

This month marks the end of our year with Honeylands and we were delighted to welcome Les Christiansen down to sort out the final details of our support.
