Exeter School U15 cricket team celebrate becoming West of England Champions
Exeter School’s U15 Cricket Team have added to their recent trophy haul by becoming West Of England Cricket Champions at the Final held in Sherborne on Wednesday 3 July. And the cherry on the cake is that it has just been announced that Exeter School pupil Ben Green has been named Captain of the South and West U15 cricket team for the Bunbury Festival, taking place at Durham University on 21-26th July 2013.
After being named Devon Cricket Champions in June, the team took on Millfield and Mounts Bay in the South West Play Off. Exeter School beat Millfield comfortably by 8 wickets and Mounts Bay by 9 wickets to qualify for the West of England Finals. This involved a Semi Final and Final with the top four schools.
In the Semi Final against Hampshire County Champions, Portsmouth Grammar School, the team fielded first and restricted Portsmouth Grammar 144 for 6. This was an outstanding effort as Portsmouth were 89 for 2 at the halfway stage. Chasing down the runs, Ben Green batted superbly scoring 70 runs off only 50 balls. Some late hitting by Will Counsell saw a win in the final over to secure a place in the Final against Clifton College.
In the Final against Bristol & Avon Champions, Clifton College, the bowlers restricted Clifton to 89 all out. Arthur Prideaux was the pick of the bowlers getting 4 for 15 off his four overs. In reply, the team chased down the score for a loss of only 4 wickets. They have now secured a place in the National Finals at Arundel Castle on Sunday 8 September.
This caps an amazing year for Exeter School as earlier in the year, the same year group of boys won the Devon Rugby Cup for the third year running and in January became U16 National Indoor Hockey Champions after a superb weekend in Croydon beating Repton in the Final.
In the U16 Outdoor Hockey, they became Devon and South West Champions and were 4th in the National Finals.
