Exeter Deaf Academy students quiz MP
Exeter Deaf Academy students took to London earlier this month to conduct their own ‘Parliament Question Time’ in the Houses of Parliament with Exeter MP, Ben Bradshaw.
Following a very successful visit to the Deaf Academy from Ben Bradshaw last year, Exeter Deaf Academy’s School Council were invited to the Houses of Parliament to meet with him and to tour around the Houses of Commons and House of Lords.
The School Council’s visit to London began with a bird’s eye view of the Houses of Parliament and Westminster skyline as they embarked on a trip on the London Eye. The next day, the Deaf Academy’s students arrived at the Houses of Parliament ready for a peek behind the scenes of the home of UK Government and to grill Exeter’s MP Ben Bradshaw.
The students had prepared questions about the working life of MPs and asked him about issues such as Deaf education and benefits for Deaf people.
Post ‘Parliament Question Time’, the School Council were taken to Downing Street and enjoyed watching their teachers undergo the rigorous security procedures necessary to be allowed through the gates. The afternoon was rounded off with a group photo outside the famous Number 10 door.
Chair of the School Council, William Thomas said, “It was a fantastic experience” and the Deaf Academy’s Head of School, Keith Stevens added, “This trip was a brilliant opportunity for our School Council students to find out first-hand about the Government and we are extremely grateful to Ben Bradshaw for his time.”
