Jack Sadler Award presented to two Heads of Section at Exeter School
Two Exeter School Combined Cadet Force (CCF) cadets have been awarded the Jack Sadler Award for outstanding contribution to the combined cadet force contingent (CCF).
Warrant Officer and Head of Army section Amanda Herring and Flight Sergeant and Head of the RAF Section Ollie Brady were presented with the brass trophy of an artillery shell case and an engraved medal by Colonel David Carson, Colonel Cadets for the South West.
This is the first time a joint Jack Sadler Award has been made in Exeter School’s history.
Contingent Commander, Lieutenant Commander (RN) Dr Geoff Chapman said: “As is customary in a Biennial Inspection year Inspecting Officer Colonel David Carson announced the Jack Sadler Award recipient in front of the whole Contingent.
“This award, in memory of OE Jack Sadler, is for outstanding contribution to the CCF and is a major award.
“They were both exceptional candidates for the award which recognises their outstanding service."
The Jack Sadler award is made annually in memory of former pupil and trooper Jack Sadler who was tragically killed in Afghanistan. He was a popular and respected senior member of the Army Section who was very much viewed as a soldier’s soldier.
Army Scholar Amanda said she wasn’t expecting the award and felt very honoured.
“CCF gives me a huge variety of people and leadership skills which have been invaluable over the past six months when we have been training new recruits.
“I have really valued the opportunity to put back into the CCF as I have thoroughly enjoyed the past four years.”
Ollie said to receive the Jack Sadler Award was a great honour and marked the end of an amazing time in the CCF.
“During the course of the 4 years I have been in the RAF section, I have been given the opportunity to take part in a range of exciting and challenging activities, from flying in military aircraft to visiting active RAF bases both in the UK and abroad.
“I had the opportunity to attend the Air Cadet Leadership Course at RAF Cranwell which helped to develop my leadership skills and gave me the confidence to be able to lead the RAF section. Visiting RAF bases has given me an insight into military life and I was able to gain valuable work experience with Air Traffic Control.
“Every week I am in a position of responsibility from which I can pass on the skills I have learned to younger cadets and share with them my passion for the CCF. Being a cadet has been a large part of my Exeter School life and I know that the skills I take with me will serve me well in the future.”
Congratulations also to Upper Sixth Formers Katie Olding and Alex Newman who are recipients of Army Scholarships.
