EDP Drug & Alcohol Services are holding an exhibition called 'The Other Side of Addiction' at Exeter Phoenix until 27th June. The exhibition features the creative work of those who access our services in the community and our prison services, to challenge the stigma surrounding drug and alcohol misuse.

In the 2014 British Drugs Survey 38% of those surveyed knew someone who has or had a serious drug problem yet drug and alcohol misuse is surrounded by stigma and stereotypes. The reality is that there are many reasons why people become dependent on drugs or alcohol and those accessing EDP’s services come from all walks of life. The artwork, creative writing and photography all reflect the artist or writers interpretation of stigma.

A call for artwork went out to all services delivered by EDP, both in the community and prisons. Over 60 pieces of work were submitted including drawings, paintings, creative writing, photography and sculpture.

A panel, including EDP patron Caroline Quentin and local artist Simon Ripley, came together to discuss every item which was submitted and to decide on the final exhibition. Here are their experiences of being involved:

“I have been delighted to help put together this wonderful exhibition highlighting the work of EDP. The art works, by service users and their families and friends, are so diverse and interesting, ranging from extraordinary drawings, photographs, songs and wonderful writings. This exhibition gives real insight into the lives of people who have lived with or are living with addiction in its many forms and is moving, funny, hard hitting, honest and beautiful in equal measure.” Caroline Quentin

“I have been asked to select work for exhibitions before but never from such an eclectic mix – photography, writing, painting, drawing, sculpture, the lot. The most striking thing about all the work was how much each piece spoke from the heart. That made all the submissions very moving and thought provoking. This is exactly what art does best – communicates the language of the emotions and feelings in a direct way. Above all, I learnt a lot about the experience of addiction and its effect upon individuals, friends and family. That message was communicated with humour and warmth in a way I would never have thought possible.” Simon Ripley

EDP Drug & Alcohol Services support people to address problems related to their drug and alcohol use. A fundamental belief underpinning our work is that, given the right support and resources, people can and do make remarkable changes. EDP provide drug and alcohol services in the prison and community throughout Devon and Dorset.
