Artists throw open their doors for Devon Open Studios
Like unwrapping a beautiful present, fans of art will find much to enjoy within the inspiring landscape of Devon this September - discovering new work, new artists and travelling through the stunning countryside where so many artists have chosen to live and work.
Devon Open Studios is one of the largest annual art events in the country, show-casing over 250 artists across a county with a seriously high art-population density. Don’t miss it.
Only at Open Studios can the visitor experience the people, creative process and ideas that unfold within the private studios of artists. Many artists also give demonstrations and show works in progress, allowing the rare chance to see the art being created and get a feel for the process from concept to completion. All the art is displayed and sold by artists directly, simultaneously helping them build their mailing lists, gain new admirers, and ultimately sustain a living.
Venture out on self-guided art tours using colour coded area maps in Devon Open Studios' brochure or just by spontaneously following the yellow arrows dotted about the countryside. Get engaged, inspired, and, on occasion, challenged by the art and you might just take home a prize painting, sculpture, jewellery or a piece of handcrafted pottery.
Artists will be opening their studios, (and often their homes) for 16 days in September, when, in some, you’ll also come across music, talks, and refreshments. Check the brochure to confirm dates, times, and find out helpful directions.
Devon Open Studios allows an exceptional chance for the public to enjoy art at its origin. It is a premier event of Devon Artist Network (DAN), a membership organisation of over 800 members, committed to raising awareness of visual arts.
Once again this year, Devon Open Studios’ key commercial sponsor is Helpful Holidays, one of the leading West Country holiday cottage specialists that markets and lets over 700 holiday homes throughout Devon, Cornwall, Somerset and Dorset. “Helpful Holidays has been awarded joint first place in the recent Which? Travel members' survey of UK self-catering accommodation, achieving Which? Recommended Provider status for the third year in succession.”
Devon Artist Network is delighted to announce that their gallery partner, the Thelma Hulbert Gallery (THG) will host the launch event of Devon Open Studios on Thursday 4 September at (THG), Honiton from 6-9pm. To coordinate with their main exhibition, they will be exhibiting the work of some of those artists opening their studios for this event in the upstairs gallery.
