Horror movie night at Exeter Cathedral

The magic of the movies comes to Exeter next week as the Cathedral prepares to host its first ever Silent Movie Night.

The special screening of 1920s horror classic Dr Jekyll and Mr Hyde takes place on Wednesday 16th September, accompanied by a live soundtrack on the restored Cathedral Organ played by internationally-renowned organist David Briggs.

Toronto-based organist Briggs was born in England and worked at Hereford, Truro and Gloucester Cathedrals before making a name for himself around the world as a musical virtuoso. His movie accompaniment will quite literally be made up on the night, a nod to a golden age when movies were silent, with accompaniments and sound-effects realised by organists and pianists in the movie theatre.

Throughout 2015 the Cathedral has marked the 350th anniversary of the building of the magnificent organ that dominates one of Exeter’s most-photographed views. The recital series (opened by the late John Scott to a packed crowd in February) has already brought a host of renowned musicians to Exeter to play the famous pipe organ, giving audiences a taste of a range of concert-repertoire.

David Davies, Acting Director of Music at the Cathedral, said: “The organ plays an important role in the worshipping life of the Cathedral and it’s wonderful that, in this anniversary year, we are able to bring the sound of this majestic instrument to a wider audience."

The Cathedral Organ was dismantled in January 2013 and was rededicated at the end of 2014 following an extensive restoration by organ builders Harrison & Harrison.

The screening takes place at Exeter Cathedral on Wednesday 16th September 2015 at 19.30.
