Mandolin and more for music group
The Mandolin Orchestra of Devon has been running for several years and has performed at many events to critical acclaim, including the London Mandolin Festival and the Banjo, Mandolin and Guitar Foundation rally.
In the early twentieth century the mandolin had something of a golden age. Across the country there were ensembles springing up in every major town, some were a mixture of banjo, guitar and mandolin, others were mandolin orchestras. Some played to a professional level, but many were amateur groups who met socially and played at local events. A large corpus of music was written for these ensembles but with the lessening in popularity of the mandolin this music was largely forgotten.
Because the mandolin is a relatively rare instrument it is unusual for mandolinists to get an opportunity to play together. The idea of the Mandolin Orchestra of Devon is to bring players together to meet each other, to learn specific mandolin repertoire, and to develop technique and expertise.
Group leader Matt Norman says: “We're a friendly group of plucked string enthusiasts who come together once a month to make beautiful music. Our repertoire ranges from Early Music through Baroque and Classical as well as folk tunes and some fun pieces.”
The group is now looking to grow and is not just looking for mandolinists. Any mandolin family instrument is welcome (mandolas, bouzoukis etc) also classical guitarists and string basses (double bass and bass guitar) would be very welcome. It is necessary to read music but the music is provided in advance so you don't ned to be able to sight read.
The group has members from all over Devon and one group member, Pat, says: “it’s a unique opportunity to play with a whole range of different instruments. The musical arrangements are brilliant. It’s great fun and really challenging, but in a very supportive way.”
The Mandolin Orchestra of Devon is a Wren Music project. Wren works with thousands of people across Devon and beyond each year, in settings as diverse as choirs, orchestras, care homes, special schools, and youth clubs.
