Bumper day of fun at farm open day
AS if running a busy beef and arable farm, as well as one of Exeter’s only butcher’s shops, wasn’t enough, local farmers Neil and Sally Grigg are soon to be opening their gates to the public, as part of the national Open Farm Sunday scheme.
The Griggs, who run Burrow Farm in Broadclyst, near Exeter, have taken part in Open Farm Sunday before, and say that in the past it proved to be a great way to give people a fun, free day out in a location that wouldn’t normally be accessible to them.
‘So many drive past our farm gates and see our cows grazing in the fields, but understandably don’t get to experience farm life as we do. Open Farm Sunday gives them a chance to do that, whilst enjoying a fun day out!’ said Neil Grigg.
And there’s plenty to do for the whole family at this year’s event. Neil and Sally are putting on tractor and trailer rides, children’s activities (including making animal masks and seed growing), animals to pet, a barbecue, cake stand and a ‘pop-up’ shop, selling a selection of the most popular products from their traditional butcher’s shop in Exeter.
On previous Open Farm Sundays, the Griggs have welcomed hundreds of visitors to the farm, and are hoping for similar numbers this year. As well as giving local visitors the chance to have a great fun day out, they’re also hoping to encourage people to find out about where their food comes from.
‘The county of Devon is responsible for so much beautiful produce. Open Farm Sunday gives us the opportunity to show people how that produce is made and farmed, hopefully meaning that they enjoy their food even more!’ said Sally Grigg.
Open Farm Sunday takes place at Burrow Farm, Broadclyst, EX5 3JA on Sunday 10 June 2018, from 10.30 – 3pm. The event is free to enter and has free parking.
