Chagford Film Festival 2013
Renowned comedian, writer and Radio 4 personality, Tony Hawks will head to Dartmoor in September to open the third Chagford Film Festival.
Tony Hawks will officially declare the festival open on 23 September when he introduces his new film, Playing the Moldovans at Tennis. This feel-good film, which tracks Tony’s quest to beat the Moldovan football team at tennis, is described as simultaneously insane, moving and hilarious. It is just one of an eclectic mix of films, brilliant events and workshops, presented by top industry professionals taking place over the six-day festival.
Oscar winner Gareth Unwin, producer of The Kings Speech returns with his new film Zaytoun. Set in Beirut, 1982 a young Palestinian refugee and an Israeli fighter pilot form a tentative bond in their attempt to make their way across war-torn Lebanon back to their home.Other confirmed features include Oliver Nakache and Eric Toledano’s Untouchable, which tells the story of the friendship between affluent paraplegic Philippe (François Cluzet) and his carer from the suburbs, Driss (Omar Sy). An exclusive screening of the silent horror classic Nosferatu will be accompanied by acclaimed harpist Elizabeth-Jane Baldry.
International festival favourite Moo Man will take to the big screen with Director Andy Heathcote and Producer Heike Bachelier in attendance. A screening of The Blues Brothers will provide no end of entertainment at this year’s sing-a-long spectacle complete with a Blues Brothers tribute band.Horror fans take note - a horror-themed night is shaping up (more details to come) and a chocolate day is also planned, so keep an eye on www.chagfordfilmfestival.com for details. Screenings will be complemented by an array of workshops and talks taking place in several venues across the town. The festival wraps up in spectacular style with a star-studded red carpet Grand Finale Evening on Saturday 28 September.
Chagford is fast becoming known as the festival centre of Devon. The film festival is in its third year and is going from strength to strength, once again it promises to bring the glamour and razzmatazz of Cannes and Hollywood to this corner of Dartmoor. In March Chagword, the town’s literary festival sold out at every event; in July, Chagstock the international music festival, brought big names like Bob Geldof and The Boomtown Rats and Billy Bragg.Closing Film Just Announced!
The Hobbit: An Unexpected Journey, has been announced as the closing film for the Chagford Film Festival. Bilbo Baggins, sets out on an “unexpected journey” to the Lonely Mountain with a spirited group of Dwarves to reclaim their stolen mountain home from a dragon named Smaug. Ryan Gage, who stars alongside Stephen Fry in the next Hobbit film The Desolation of Smaug, will be introducing An Unexpected Journey and will also be taking part in a Q&A. And a dragon……………watch out.

There are a number of Festival Workshops just released, get ready for……
Workshop: Special Effects in the MoviesFriday 27th September 10.00am
This workshop is presented by Stephen Saunders featuring the work of Jose Granell, Director of Miniature & Special Effects. Jose runs the Magic Camera Company at Shepperton Studios and has worked on many major film productions – K19 The Widowmaker, Charlie the Chocolate Factory, Enigma, Lost in Space, Entrapment and many others. The programme will introduce the magic of special effects from its early days to the present, demonstrating the artistry behind the magic and illustrating some of the painstaking efforts the special effects and model makers go through to produce believable images for the screen. Jose was the man who built Hogwarts Castle in Harry Potter and the man who blew up The Houses of Parliament in ‘V for Vendetta.’
Workshop: Breakfast at Tiffany’s Film Makeup Techniques

Make up artist Hannah Wing will be demonstrating the art of Hollywood Glamour. The film Breakfast at Tiffany’s will be showing in the background and breakfast will be served, creating a true ‘Breakfast at Tiffany’s’ experience! Hannah will demonstrate the various techniques and makeup magic that she uses on catwalks and editorials and in the film and television industry. With the emerging trend for HD in film and TV, Hannah is frequently asked to train industry professionals at ITV, Sky and BBC as well as providing training to makeup students around the country. As her makeup CV expanded, she added SFX and costume design/supervision to her repertoire. In early 2012 she was commissioned to author and style a vintage hair and makeup guidebook - 'The Vintage Beauty Parlor' published in March 2013.

After a long career in the cutting rooms involved in a wide range of productions working on T.V. series and major feature films, Ron Saunders moved into the world of archive film research. He returns, by popular demand, with another selection of items culled from the 25 million feet of film while in charge of in charge of British Pathe's Pinewood Studios division, and once again making some unexpected connections. Apart from illustrating changing attitudes with news items that now verge on the extraordinary, Ron will be showing that ‘Britain Has Always Had Talent’. Featuring the diverse and varied talents of those who entertained the public, from the Music Hall, radio, the record industry, through WW2 up to the age of television, it will feature well-known artists as well as the eccentric, outrageous and downright weird!
