City artist's latest venture
Art-lovers are lining up to be part of an exciting new project that sees Exeter and its people taking a starring role in a series of artworks.
The project – TOPOS – is taking over an empty city-centre office space and through its crowdfunding campaign offers the opportunity to be part of a living landscape – digital recreations of famous landscapes - or even to commission an original piece of art.
Deborah Clark, owner of Southernhay House was one of the first to sign up. She said: “I've been bitching about the lack of a serious contemporary art scene in Exeter since I got here so what more can I do? I'm hoping, and I believe, that Volkhardt's project will put Exeter on the radar of conceptual art."
The project has been made possible by a grant from Arts Council England and the generosity of property-owners Princesshay. Manager Wayne Pearce said “Princesshay is very pleased to support Volkhardt Müller with the TOPOS project. We expect the project to increase public awareness of the great art being created in the city.”
Details of the pledges are available on artist Volkhardt Müller’s website, along with information about his previous international prize-winning engagements in the city.
“TOPOS will be an exhibition and events space, where artists, members of the public and invited speakers can share in and contribute to the experience, proving that anyone can have a stake in Exeter's contemporary art scene.”
Müller is known for his high-quality creative engagements in the city, including his exhibition at Royal Albert Memorial Museum while it was Museum of the year in 2012.
His scenes of Exeter’s street life also won him 3rd prize at Linocut Today , the International competition for contemporary linocut in 2013.
"This is a great chance for people to grab an original piece of work from an international artist in time for Christmas - you could even commission something for the person who has everything! It's also an opportunity to show support for a brilliant local creative initiative." Said local arts curator Stuart Crewes.
