Exeter School’s National Trust concert celebrates 17 years

For many pupils, parents and National Trust supporters, the Exeter School Concert in aid of the National Trust in Exeter Cathedral is a highlight in the calendar. 

For the seventeenth year running, the concert showcases the school’s senior orchestral groups, brass and choirs in the magnificent cathedral setting.

Around 200 pupils ranging in age from 11 up to 18 will be making this year’s concert on Tuesday 5 December a night to remember.

Director of Music Peter Tamblyn said: “The Cathedral is a marvellous venue, and the atmosphere at our annual concert in aid of the Friends of the National Trust makes it one of the highpoints of our busy musical year.

“Pupils from 11 – 18 years old will be performing, and we are delighted that so many of their friends and families will be coming to support them and share in this very special event.

“For the first time, this year we will be combining our Symphony Orchestra, consisting of our most experienced orchestral instrumentalists, with our Concert Orchestra, who are drawn from Years 7 – 9. 

“The massed-players will perform Wagner’s Ride of the Valkyries, which promises to be spectacular.”

Festive items include Have Yourself a Merry Little Christmas from girls’ choir, Belles Canto, an arrangement of Noel Nouvelet played by the Harp Ensemble, In Dulci Jubilo, sung by Chamber Choir whilst Senior Choir will perform People Prepare, a catchy composition by teacher and accompanist Andrew Daldorph. In addition, there will be carols for everyone to sing and readings to further inspire festive spirit.

National Trust Exeter and District Centre Chairman, Brian Trump, said the Exeter and District Centre arranges regular talks and outings for National Trust members to provide an opportunity for members to meet socially and help to raise funds for local Trust projects. 

“The Christmas Concert in the Cathedral, with the excellent Exeter School choirs and orchestras, is one of the highlights of our Autumn programme and we look forward to welcoming members of the public to join us for this very special evening.”

National Trust Assistant Director of Operations, Toby Fox, said membership and visitor income makes a vital contribution to their conservation work, but they rely on additional generosity to continue to protect the irreplaceable.

“Getting involved with a supporter group is a great way to help us protect some of the best-loved local places in our care,” he said.

“Over the last year, the Exeter and District Centre has raised nearly £6,500 through activities such as this festive concert, to ensure they remain special for everyone.”
