Yet, many people find something particularly special, enticing, and unique about the experience visiting a physical casino can provide.
And the experience you can find in some casinos might just be so unique it verges on mind-boggling.
Here is our list of the most surprising casinos in the world.
Casino in the Back Room of a Church in Antarctica
Researchers spend years on end in Antarctica and need some entertainment there too. So it’s not all that surprising that the staff of the Esperanza Base controlled by Argentina ended up organizing a small casino to bring some joy and variety to their long stay there. The reason this casino is in a church of all places is that there are not many buildings in Antarctica, so many of them are multipurpose. And the church in question, the Capilla de San Francisco de Asís, just happened to be one of such multipurpose buildings.
Grosvenor London Taxi Cab Casino
Really want to visit a casino, but don’t have time for that? How about doing it while riding in a taxi? This somewhat crazy arrangement was possible in 2016 with the Grosvenor Casino’s campaign called the “World’s Smallest Travelling Casino”. In the back of the Grosvenor taxi cab, there were a gaming table, a bar, a television screen, and online gambling services available. A croupier’s seat was next to the driver but turned around so that the croupier faced passengers. Grosvenor Taxi Cab Casino was very popular while it lasted.
The Basement Casino in the North Cadbury Court
Britain is filled with great tourist locations, quite a few of which can be found here in Exeter too. When it comes to unique casinos, England seems to be one of the world leaders as well. The second surprising British casino in our list is located in the basement of the North Cadbury Court in Yeovil. The building itself is quite an interesting location. The North Cadbury Court is an Elizabethan mansion of the 16th century built on the 12th-century meeting hall remains. When the owners started renovating the building in 2018, they decided to equip the basement with many unexpected entertainment features. One of them is a disco. Another one is a casino. This basement casino is used for private gambling by those who rent the whole North Cadbury Court, so the features it offers are relatively limited. But it does have a blackjack table, a poker table, a roulette table, and a full-time croupier.
The Haunted Bally’s Casino
Casinos often have rather turbulent history with many intense and violent events being associated with them. This is probably the reason why casinos are considered to be among the most haunted places, along with old castles and graveyards. And the most haunted place in the world capital of casinos itself, Las Vegas, is Bally’s Casino. As with many ghost stories, Bally’s haunted history started with a terrible tragedy. In 1980, when the building used to be the MGM Grand Hotel, there was a horrible fire, during which 85 people died. The building was reconstructed and turned into a casino, but one of the towers that suffered from the fire remained a part of the building. Ever since then, people report hearing strange noises, seeing unusual shadows, and experiencing furniture moving on its own in Bally’s. The casino staff even saw a group of people disappearing in front of their eyes.
