New all-female farcical comedy comes to Exmouth
This summer a little theatre company from Hertfordshire who are building a name for themselves around the UK with their unique brand of Adult Panto are out on the road with a very different kind of adult comedy.
The Market Theatre Company from Hitchin in Hertfordshire have been touring the UK since 2004 and have steadily built a cult following for their farcical, slick, innuendo-heavy adult panto’s which now run from November through to the beginning of March with over 30 venues visited last season - including Exmouth Pavilion on Friday 21 June.
From 30th May this year they will be back on the road with another farcical comedy, but this time not with a fairy-tale backdrop but set in Rome.
The ‘Roman Romp’ is a farcical adult comedy set in ‘The Temple of Vesta’ where it is said that ‘celibacy’ is a way of life. However, for reluctant virgin, Frigella the Fulfiller (played by Lauren Osborn), this means her only chance at what she subtly calls ‘Shagamus’ is to escape to the Temple of Venus next door, run by the mischievous High Priestess Glorious Clitorus (played by Pippa Johnson).
A fool-proof plan is needed to escape the temple and the clutches of the High Priestess, Virginia Creeper (played by Kate Eason). Sadly, with Frigella’s well-meaning but charmingly stupid friend, Bimbus (played by Jemma Carlisle), things will never be straightforward and as with all great farcical comedy, chaos and confusion ensues!
Writer and Director Kirk Foster, who also writes and directs the Adult Panto’s says, “the Roman Romp is much more of a play than the adult panto but will still contain the same type of humour and will involve some audience participation”, he continues, “we’ve been producing shows at our own theatre in Hitchin since 1996 and we are known for our slick, fast paced comedies which, in style have theirroots in Whitehall Farce. We’ve had a great response from our local audiences with this show and we can’t wait now to share it further afield”.
Cast member Lauren Osborn who has appeared in the Adult Panto and also previously in The Roman Romp says “having both watched and performed in these shows in the past, I defy anyone not to have a good time. It’s really clever and for the characters it’s all about being in the wrong place at the wrong time. I like to compare it, in style, to carry on and Faulty Towers which you really can’t beat in terms of comedy”.
