January may be over but the new year is still in its infancy. There are 11 months still to run and a lot can happen in that time.

There are entire trends that will come and go in 2025 that have not even got off the ground yet. The best-selling books, most-watched movies, and hottest songs are all still to be released.

The same is true for video games. Although many titles in the modern world of gaming live on for years or even decades, new blockbusters go on sale regularly too. So lets take a look at the games that players will be playing in Exeter and beyond in 2025.

EA Sports FC

There’s no denying that we love our football here in Essex. The county may not have a club in the top flight but passions run deep for local teams as they fight to climb up the pyramid. Exeter’s most famous comedian, Josh Widdicombe, exemplifies this. In addition to appearing on shows like QI, Live at the Apollo, and Hypothetical, he is the co-host of the popular football podcast ‘Quickly Kevin; will he score? The 90s Football Show’.

This popularity is why EA Sports FC, the football video game formerly known as FIFA, is immensely popular right across the county.

The game allows players to step into the boots of their favourite footballers and compete in competitions games against clubs from top competitions like the Premier League, FA Cup, and UEFA Champions League.

Globally, EA Sports FC 25 has not been able to live up to the success of previous releases of the game, causing Electronic Arts to revise down its revenue projections slightly in late January. However, here in the UK, the game has topped the retail game charts for yet another year thanks to our national love for the sport.

We can, therefore, expect EA Sports FC 25 and 26, when it is released later this year, to be some of the most popular games played in Essex in 2025.

Starburst

The UK has been a leader in the online casino space for decades, thanks to the competitive and safe regulatory environment created by the Gambling Act 2005. Today, Exeter games have thousands of different different online casino slots available at their fingertips, including popular titles like Rich Wilde and the Book of Dead and as well as unique games like Diamond Stars.

Demand for slots continues to grow, with the UK’s regulator regularly reporting record numbers for what it calls ‘remote’ gaming. But of all these thousands of slots, few hold a candle to Starburst in terms of recognition, popularity, and longevity.

It was first released in 2012, making it one of the oldest slot games on the market. Yet it holds its own against more modern releases thanks to its low volatility, timeless graphics, and mix of features.

Of all the slot games that will get played in Exeter this year, Starburst is going to be up there as one of the most popular.

Grand Theft Auto

Grand Theft Auto is a video game that breaks records over and over again. Its most recent instalment, GTA V, is second only to Minecraft in total sales having shifted over 200 million units compared to the pixelated block-building sandbox title’s 300+ million units sold.

Part of GTA V’s monumental sales figures has been the fact that it’s been released on three generations of consoles over its lifetime with no successor to take its title. Instead, Rockstars Games has been busy milking its colossal cash cow by creating a continuous conga line of content for Grand Theft Auto Online.

However, that is set to change in 2025 as the 12-year wait for Grand Theft Auto VI is scheduled for release towards the end of the year.

You can take it as a given that GTA VI will break records for sales right out of the gate and will become the most-played game of the year. But even until then, GTA V and GTA Online will continue to attract millions of players every day.
