Pop-up Opera comes to Devon
2015 has already seen Pop-up Opera return with a dazzling production of Mozart’s comic opera Die Entführung aus dem Serail that could transform the way you think about opera as an art form (Britishtheatre.com). Now, they’re back with L'Italiana in Algeri (The Italian girl in Algiers).
Rossini meets Fear and Loathing in Las Vegas, against a backdrop of glitz and grit at the Algiers Hotel, Nevada. Hotel employee, Lindoro, is down on his luck and in debt to the Algiers' corrupt and extravagant owner, Mustafa. Lindoro's Italian-American girlfriend, Isabella, arrives in Vegas under the pretence of auditioning as a show-girl to try and get Lindoro out of this mess.
Mustafa, bored with his faded starlet wife, Elvira, is enraptured by the headstrong Isabella: but will she be seduced by his power and money?
New stage director James Hurley comments, The surreal and dangerous world of Las Vegas breathes new life into Rossini's absurd exotic comedy, as love and fidelity compete against the city's tantalising promise of endless wealth and sensory gratification.
Pop-up Opera will be touring to various unusual and intimate venues across the country including a garlic farm in the Isle of Wight and the extra special Thames Tunnel Shaft.
Pop-up Opera endeavours to make opera entertaining, without compromising quality – all operas are performed in their original language. The operas are skillfully adapted to each
individual venue, making every performance unique, while always maintaining the highest standards. The combination of amazing venues, along with an informal atmosphere and
engaging productions, offers a greater connection to the singers and the music, something even seasoned opera-goers often miss.
Pop-up Opera brings Rossini’s The Italian in Algiers to The Corn Barn in Cullompton on Thursday 11th June, 7.30pm.
Tickets £20, available here.
