Rock legends Feeder head to Exeter
As previously reported indie rock legends Feeder are set to play the Great Hall at Exeter University on Saturday 2 November, and we can now reveal that Devon’s own Daniel Steer has been selected by the band to open the show.
More than two decades after their first show the Feeder are reinvigorated, tapping into the essential, primal energy that first inspired them. New album ‘Tallulah’ is evidence of this – snappy song writing, expertly produced, and completely natural, completely organic.
‘Tallulah’ is perhaps the band’s most creative yet also concise record, an album that takes real chances while remaining committed to their punk-edged melodies and crisp song construction. “I had to stop myself from writing, as I write too many songs!” laughs Grant Nicholas. “The album has a certain thread, there are certain songs that feel very connected. It’s old school.”
Opening song ‘Youth’ is a direct, unrelenting introduction, a song that drives forwards while lyrically looking back on their formation. “It’s got a few little flashbacks, personal things,” reveals Nicholas. “I think it’s a song that a lot of people can relate to. It’s really uplifting, very summery. I had this West Coast meets South Wales vibe in my head. A classic indie rock song, really.”
Songs such as ‘Kyoto’ and ‘Guillotine’ betray a darker side to the band, while stunning album cut ‘Fear of Flying’ has an undoubted Police edge in its picked guitar part, with Feeder accepting their role as elders in an increasingly social media driven music scene. “It’s based on some of my own feelings, this fear of being successful and then having to stop. It’s the fear of grandstanding, and it all coming to an end.”
But Feeder aren’t about to stop. ‘Tallulah’ opens a bold new chapter, one that thirsts for fresh challenges. “There’s a chemistry that you have when you’re a younger band which is kind of a magical time,” he says. “And if you can maintain some of that chemistry 20 years later and do it in a natural way then I think that’s a really good thing.”
Opening the show in Exeter will be Daniel Steer. Whether it’s your job, your boss, your mental health, a lapse in judgment, or an addiction; you’re not alone. Having battled all of the above, Daniel Steer has come out the other side with a story to tell and the songs to tell it.
Having released 3 albums as front man and songwriter for rock band Reigning Days, Daniel’s first solo album comes out in January 2020 and he kicks off touring his new band supporting Feeder in Exeter, followed by headline shows in London and Exeter.
He has performed on main stages and toured extensively throughout Europe, the USA, India, Russia and in the UK at Glastonbury, Download, Latitude, 2,000 Trees, The Great Escape and supported US rockers Wilson and Feeder on tour. His music has been played in the UK and internationally on BBC
Radio 1, Radio X, Amazing Radio, Planet Rock, Virgin and Kroq. He has had tracks in the Top 10 in the Kerrang!, Scuzz and MTV charts and was Number 1 on Apple Rock and his tracks have several million streams on Spotify.
“What an absolute powerhouse of a new song from @dansteermusic! This triumphant tune is called ‘The Wire’ and it’s from his upcoming self-titled debut album. The track feels heartfelt and urgent and I feel like he’s found now the sound that he has always wanted to be playing. It sounds like he needs to shout it from the musical rooftops and he’s doing it." BBC Introducing
