Soldiers' Charity marks Exeter Armed Forces Day with Waterloo anniversary concert at Exeter Cathedral
An evening of music and readings on Saturday 20 June at 7.30 pm to raise funds for the Army’s National Charity
Some of the South West’s most talented musicians are joining forces on 20 June to support the Devon branch of the Army’s charity, ABF The Soldiers’ Charity. The combined talents of the Exeter Symphony Orchestra and the Exeter Philharmonic Choir will provide a programme of music to honour the courage, service and sacrifice of our soldiers from 1815 to 2015. Joining them will be internationally renowned violinist Tamsin Waley-Cohen whose family roots are in Exmoor. She will be playing The Lark Ascending by Ralph Vaughn Williams. Celebrated Chagford-based harpist, Elizabeth-Jane Baldry has composed a special piece of music “A Song For Our Soldiers” which will be performed at it’s world premiere by soprano and Army wife, Davina Hastings.
Also taking part are Devon favourites Caroline Quentin and Angela Rippon, with readings specially chosen to commemorate the Battle of Waterloo. Adding a military flavor will be the Bugles from The Salamanca Band of The Rifles and the Exeter Pipers. The Pipers will be led by James Robertson, the son of the late and great Pipe Major JB Robertson MBE, Scots Guards. Pipe Major Roberston was the man who taught the pipes to the Concert’s producer, Morchard Bishop resident Hamish Monro.
Hamish tells us: “This will be a very special and rare musical event combining the best that Devon has to offer in terms of both professional and amateur musicians. We are hugely grateful that they are all so willing to support our soldiers. Ticket sales have been fair so far, but we still have seats available at all prices and our aim is a sell out Concert”.
