Theatre West presents Icarus in Love at Exeter's Bike Shed Theatre
Part of Theatre West’s autumn season ‘The One Day Project’Theatre West presents Icarus in Love, a new play written by Edson Burton, part of the company’s intriguing autumn season ‘The One Day Project’. The season features five new plays which all take their inspiration from the global happenings of one day in history - 1 October 2013.
Icarus in Love, opens on 25 November and runs until 6 December at The Bike Shed Theatre, Exeter.
It will be preceded by Drifters, a short play by Martin Malcolm.
Set in the swinging 60s, Icarus in Love tells the story of lovers Reg and Henri. Gay men at a time when homosexuality is a criminal offence; interracial lovers in a racist society; jazzers in the time of the Beatles; they are outcasts amongst outcasts and freedom for them is an unattainable dream. Yet as resident musicians in the smouldering enclave of a Soho jazz club, they enjoy a glamour and verve that others envy and life is a constant party. But when brutality enters their world and gangsterism seeps into the club, their old demons start to rise up. Can the long awaited Bill to legalise gay sex save them from the gathering storm or is their bubble about to burst?
Ann Stiddard, joint Artistic Director of Theatre West said “This season is a major landmark for the company. Not only does it mark the 100th new play to be produced by Theatre West, but after 17 years at the Alma Tavern, we are striking out to produce work in some of our favourite venues around Bristol and beyond. We are really excited to hit the road and bring our autumn season of exceptional writing to brand new audiences.”
Performances are at 7.30pm daily.
