We’re going to build a wall! Author Tim Marshall to visit Exeter
Tim Marshall, No.1 Sunday Times bestselling author of Prisoners of Geography, will be speaking about his new book Divided: Why We’re Living in an Age of Walls early in the New Year.
The talk, taking place at the Exeter Phoenix, will encourage audiences to consider how money, race, religion and politics have all become divisive tools in the current social and political climate.
Covering China, the USA, Israel and Palestine, the Middle East, the Indian subcontinent, Africa, Europe and the UK, this gripping talk delves into our past and our present to reveal the fault lines that will shape our world for years to come.
Examples such as Donald Trump’s infamous wall are used to illustrate the history of division in America, as well as its rocky future. Tim also discusses how The Great Firewall of China separates ‘us’ from ‘them’. He moves on to Europe, where the explosive combination of politics and migration threatens liberal democracy itself.
Director of the Royal Geographical Society (with IBG), Professor Joe Smith, said:
“In the current social and political climate, a geographical lens on the world brings unique insights into what unites and divides us. Tim’s talk will be a fascinating insight into the new politics of place and identity.”
When asked what audience members can expect of his talk, Tim answered:
“Realism, tinged I hope with optimism, and possibly a bad joke or two.”
Every story has two sides, and so does every wall. Join Tim to hear about of the new era of tribalism on Sunday 10 March.
