Grandad and the Machine

A story for anyone who ever dreamed of a different world.  A 100-year-old mechanical monster emerges from the waves. Everyday objects turn on their makers and the Empire is plunged into chaos. No one knows why. No one can stop it. Except maybe Grandad. He always was good with a spanner. That’s why Imogen and her father head north to find him. Kamatala

Join Kamatala in their journey as they  bridge the mystery and mystique of the Orient with the might and majesty of the Occident in this first of its kind theatre production to hit the UK, right here in the heart of Exeter. Expect to witness the sinuous, serpentine coiling of Tribal Fusion Bellydance, the bounce and vigour of Bollywood and Khalbelia Gypsy Dance of Rajasthan, India and even the authentic yet modern sisterhood tribal spirit of American Tribal Style Bellydance with its strong influences from Spanish Flamenco to Bedouin and Egyptian Gawazee tribal dances.  8pm-10pm with intermission, bar, and souk stalls with authentic tribal and fusion jewellery, costuming, clothing, arts and crafts, professional photography, Henna Mendhi and Indian Bridal make up booth to be found in the Clifford Room.  Tickets £16. www.barnfieldtheatre.org.uk

Waterloo anniversary charity concert

A special concert to mark the 200th Anniversary of the Battle of Waterloo. The concert will celebrate the courage, service and sacrifice of our soldiers from the Battle of Waterloo, through both World Wars to operations in Afghanistan. It will feature The Exeter Symphony Orchestra, with violinist Tamsin Waley-Cohen; The Exeter Philharmonic Choir; The Exeter Pipers and the Silver Bugles of 6th Battalion The Rifles.  Tickets £12-£25 available at www.exeter-cathedral.org.uk or by calling 01392 285983.

Exeter celebrates Armed Forces Day

Exeter city centre will be full of servicemen and women, past, present and future as it celebrates Armed Forces Day. As part of the city’s annual celebrations of the work of the Armed Forces, almost 400 servicemen and women from all branches of the armed forces will be marching through the City Centre. Mud walk along the Exe

Dig out your wellies for a fact-finding mud walk along the Exe Estuary led by East Devon District Council’s Countryside Rangers. Learn about the creatures that make their homes in and on the mud and, what’s more, the event is free and open to all. Meet at 1.30pm opposite the toilets at Imperial Road Rec in Exmouth. Drop-in Herbal Tea Bar

Medical herbalist Jayne Palmer of Roots To Health is putting on a special tea bar in Honiton to mark the start of Herbal Medicine Week. Jayne is inviting people to drop in for a free day of tea tasting to find out about the benefits of herbal beverages and how they can be used to treat common ailments and other health issues.

Morchard Bishop Flower Festival
Saturday & Sunday, St Mary’s Church, Morchard Bishop
This flower festival will transport you back to your childhood as the theme is Nursery Rhymes. Around 20 displays will be on show in this beautiful old church, from Oranges and Lemons to Little Miss Muffet and many more.  Also there will be an In Memoriam flower display, alongside the names of those to be remembered. Ploughman's lunches (noon-2pm) and cream teas (3pm-4.30pm) on both days in the Memorial Hall close by the church are also available. Disabled access and toilets on site. You’ll also find a grand bric-a-brac stall in the Memorial Hall. On Sunday the church service at St Mary's Church from 5.30pm will be a light-hearted service with a flower theme. All welcome. Festival opening times: Saturday 10am-6pm, Sunday 10am-4.30pm. Admission: £1 on the door (programme included), children free.

Heavitree Jumble Trail

Heavitree is hosting its first Jumble trail on Sunday 21 June 2-4pm. Want an afternoon getting to know the people in your community whilst also hunting down a bargain? Jumble Trail is for you... Stalls selling plants, jumble, hand-made jewellery, pop up cafes, scout’s car wash and so much more have all signed up so far! Stall holders can sign up free of charge by searching for the Heavitree event on www.jumbletrail.com. Browsers and buyers can find locations and details of stalls on this website too. Many local groups are taking part. The 2nd Exeter Scout Group are teaming up with Exeter Lions and will be providing stalls, information, refreshments and their excellent car wash at their scout hut from 12pm on South Lawn Terrace. It’s a great way to meet other people, find out about the area, support your local community and bag a bargain.

World War Two & Father’s Day

Dads and service personnel can visit free when accompanied by a paying child. Powderham Castle’s archivist, Felicity Harper, will be giving a fascinating talk about Powderham Castle during World War Two at 12.30pm and 2.30pm. Felt Poppy maker, Jenny Liggins will be showing visitors how to make felt poppies.  All other attractions open and available as normal. More information here

Antonio Marguet: The Compelling Allure of Golden Yellow
Exeter Phoenix
Growing up between Syria and Spain, Antonio Marguet attributes a childhood fascination with sculpting plastic objects to the influence of his father's bubble-gum factory. Now based in London, Marguet works at the boundary between sculpture, installation and photography, bringing together a range of interdisciplinary skills to create highly original, unconventional and often humorous objects. This exhibition brings together works from recent bodies of work Toenail Constellations and Deodorant Games as well as the first viewing of new work from his latest series Skin of Shark's Teeth.  The exhibition runs until 31 July. www.exeterphoenix.org.uk

Exmouth Art Group Exhibition
A la Ronde, Exmouth
An exhibition by Exmouth Art Group inspired by the beauty of the surrounding area, the tranquil setting of the A La Ronde house and gardens provide an ideal backdrop for this eclectic range of paintings. Social Fabric: African Textiles Today
RAMM, Queen Street, Exeter
An exploration of the history, manufacture and social significance of African printed and factory-woven textiles. The designs mirror the convergence of African tastes and patronage with strong historical and contemporary trading ties from across the globe. The exhibition runs until 6 September.
