Strawberries in January

Do you ever wish love could be more like the movies? Strawberries in January is a biting heartwarming comedy about four romantically challenged singletons you stumble through contemporary Montréal in search of in search for love.  Tickets: £12 on Friday  (with champagne), £10 on Saturday. Duplicity
Friday & Saturday, 8pm, Barnfield Theatre, Exeter
London, 1977, Britain is celebrating the Queen’s Silver Jubilee and England is dreaming. Set against the volatile backdrop of the Punk Rock explosion, Duplicity follows the journey of identical twins, Tommy and Finn, as their sense of self and reality disintegrate into a maelstrom of anarchy, chaos and disorder. Exploring themes of identity, duality and deceit, Duplicity is a new and original play that uses monologue, interwoven with action, projection and music to create a powerful and candid drama. A Little Nonsense

Through mime, slapstick, poetry and farce, A Little Nonsense is a bare-knuckle look at the sharp edge of funny. The play follows a tortured double-act as they walk the tightrope between love and loathing and question the importance of light and shade in our lives. Mr Scruff

Rachel Sermanni

Rachel Sermanni, the 22 year old singer-songwriter from Carrbridge in the Scottish Highlands, has a growing reputation as one of folk’s bright new things. Informal demonstration: Portraits in Miniature
Saturday, 10.30am, RAMM, Queen Street, Exeter
Artists Jenny Brooks and Aza Adlam of the Hilliard Society will give talks and demonstrate miniature portrait painting techniques showing work in progress with opportunities for you to have a go. Drop in 10.30am-12.30pm and 1.30pm-3.30pm. Free.

EXHIBITIONS

Crafty fun - a world of words at Devon Guild
Devon Guild of Craftsmen, Riverside Mill, Bovey Tracey
Narrative Remains is an exhibition about words and making running  until Sunday 23 March at the Devon Guild of Craftsmen. The idea of ‘Narrative Remains’ had 11 UK artist-makers creating work imprinted with stories from the past, snatches of words and scattered letters, so viewers will find clues to many different ideas and thoughts coming out of the clay, print and textiles. The gallery has a giant walk in tower built from over 2,000 old books, there are hand-embroidered portraits made out of tiny words, telling the story behind each face and a work based on text messages-called 'Effluence' pours hand-stitched letters out of glowing tubes. Degrees of Animation
Thelma Hulbert Gallery, Dowell Street, Honiton
Celebrating a new collaboration of the South West's animation courses, the New Year kicks off at THG with Degrees of Animation, part of 2014’s Animated Exeter festival. Focusing on the work of some of the most exciting new talent to graduate from animation courses across the South West, this year's Animated Exeter exhibition gives an insight into the work involved in producing even the shortest animation. Some of the original models and drawings will be shown alongside the films. Open Tuesday to Saturday, 10am-5pm, the exhibition runs until 1 March. www.thelmahulbert.com

Aspects of A la Ronde by Michael Buckland
A La Ronde, Exmouth
Exmouth artist Michael Buckland is known locally for his vibrant and colourful paintings. This will be evidenced in this exhibition of new paintings of A la Ronde. Included will be exterior views of the house, the apple orchard and visitors enjoying a cream tea under the ash tree. Interior subjects will show the quirky and individual character of the rooms. Light reflected from mirrors and windows has caught his painter's eye. Open 10.30am-5pm daily, the exhibition runs until 23 February. Normal admission applies. More details: 01395 265514.
