Award-winning storyteller at Devon Guild this Easter
Storytelling is magic. Especially when it brings strange and wonderful objects to life. On 30 March you can hear talented performer Wilf Merttens tell tales about the unusual objects on show in the Devon Guild’s current exhibition,‘Transplantation’. Wilf, who ‘tells poems, brings legends, jumps about’ - has won awards for his vibrant performances (Storyteller of the Year 2009, Bristol Storytelling slam prize) which entertain young and old alike. On Easter Saturday he will draw inspiration from the pieces of contemporary narrative jewellery displayed in the Guild gallery until Sunday 21 April.
The exhibition explores how objects can tell personal stories about our history and memory. Artists from the UK and Australia combine found objects and precious metals to create quirky and beautiful ornamental jewellery. They have used materials such as communion wafers and biscuit tins to express their sense of place, memories of moving home - or country. The exhibition encourages us to find out how different artists make work about their history and heritage, and urges us to think about our own experiences of transplantation. Wilf will take these ideas and mix them up with myth and imagination.
To continue the theme of the exhibition, there are mapping and design activities for visitors and also a jewellery workshop on the 20 April, where you can learn to make a textured pendant using mixed metals and stones.
Storytelling: Saturday 30 March, 11am-12pm. Guild gallery.
All ages welcome. £3 adults/children (children under 2 years free).
