Exeter’s historic buildings join forces to offer new school trips

Some of Exeter’s most historic buildings are teaming up to offer schoolchildren educational tours.

Exeter Cathedral has joined forces with Exeter’s historic Guildhall, St Nicholas Priory, the Royal Albert Memorial Museum and Art Gallery, and Exeter Custom House to offer new learning opportunities at the famous buildings.

Other historic buildings in the city, including Tucker’s Hall, Exeter Mosque and Exeter Synagogue are also getting involved in the initiative.

The partnership between the Cathedral and Exeter City Council will promote the historic locations to schools in the area, offering opportunities for day trips and tours.

Jonathan Scott, Heritage and Engagement Manager at Exeter Cathedral, said: “We’re delighted to be working closely with the City Council to promote the history of Exeter and these fabulous buildings. Together they have a combined history of over three thousand years, so what better starting place for young people to learn about Exeter.”

Cllr Laura Wright, Deputy Leader and Lead Councillor for Culture and City Centre Strategy, said: “It’s great that we can combine our strengths and offer up these educational opportunities at these key locations in Exeter.

“Children are always fascinated in learning about people and cultures from the past. Being able to have a full sensory experience of these wonderful buildings whilst learning about their origins and use over the years will be an experience they can then apply to future thinking and innovation as adults.

“I’m also very excited about the breadth of experience, fun and learning that our children will have through the diversity of Exeter culture contained within these historic buildings, which I hope will resonate with them for years to come”.
