Exeter Respect @ Home and Online

Exeter Respect Festival is not letting Covid-19 get the better of them. Instead of taking place in Belmont Park, its home since 2009, the festival will be represented online at www.exeter-respect.org from midday on Sunday 5th July 2020 with material reflecting the music, art and dance contributed by well-loved participants of the Exeter Respect Festival.

Then Exeter Respect will hold a vigil at Belmont Park at 5pm. Bring your pen or colours to draw or write a message on the wall.

In the wake of George Floyd and Black Lives Matter, Exeter Respect’s message ‘All Different, All Equal’ is even more pertinent today, so from Sunday 5th July, www.exeter-respect.org.uk will be filled with material reflecting the music, art and dance contributed by well-loved participants of the Exeter Respect Festival.

There is also a colour-in poster available for download from www.exeter-respect.org that can be displayed in windows or any other convenient place.

Respect @ Home and Online is dedicated to all NHS, care and key workers.

Exeter Respect is the city’s annual celebration of diversity which uses the performing and creative arts to engage the wider community in saying no to racism and all forms of prejudice. The Respect ethos is a simple one: racism and prejudice often spring from fear, and fear is often based on ignorance, so let’s overcome ignorance by getting to know one another and sharing, not shunning our cultures. One of the best ways to get to know someone is to enjoy yourself with them, hence the celebratory event and adoption of the old Commission for Racial Equality slogan: All Different, All Equal!

The first Exeter Respect festival took place in 1997 and there has been a celebration virtually every year since then. From 2003 to 2008 Exeter Respect’s biggest event was at Exeter Phoenix Arts Centre, but from 2009 to the present day the focus has been a giant two day festival in Belmont Park, with a footfall of around 20,000 people every year.
