1,320 kids to race through Exeter streets
A record number of 1,320 primary school pupils across Exeter are set to take to the stage, and complete their own half marathon challenge as part of Exeter’s Great West Run Schools’ Challenge, taking place on Sunday 18 October 2015.
Schools from across the city signed up to the 12 week programme, which encouraged pupils to run the equivalent of a mile a week in the lead up to Exeter’s Great West Run. They will now complete their final mile on race day to make up their own half marathon distance, with a fantastic city finish in front of thousands of spectators!
Taking place in association with Devon Air Ambulance Trust, all pupils will not only play an important part in fundraising for these local children’s services, but will also go on to receive their very own t-shirt, goody bag and Exeter’s Great West Run medal!
Jamie Warren, Head of Marketing and Commercial at organisers GO2, said: “The concept of the Schools’ Challenge has proved to be incredibly popular at Exeter’s Great West Run, and is the perfect way to inspire the younger generation to take up the sport of running! We are pleased that the 2015 race has encouraged more young runners than ever, and we can’t wait to see them complete their final mile on race day in front of thousands of cheering spectators!”
Caroline Creer, Fundraising Director of Devon Air Ambulance Trust said: “We are delighted to be the charity partner for this year’s Schools Challenge, part of Exeter’s Great West Run. We wish them all on race day and will be there to cheer them over the finishing line!”
Schools’ Challenge runners will also be treated to four-time Olympian and European 10,000 metre champion Jo Pavey, as their official race starter. She said: “Being part of Exeter’s Great West Run is truly an honour. The race passes some of my favourite city sights, and takes in all that is great about Exeter. Good luck to all the schools taking part!”
