Speed restrictions on the A38 will remain in place this weekend as the Highways Agency  prepare to close most of England’s roadworks for the bank holiday weekend.

The Highways Agency says that works on the A38, near Haldon Hill, cannot be removed due to safety concerns caused by the removal of the road’s safety barrier to fit a contraflow. However, the agency believe that the delays caused by the road work will be “slight”.

The 10 week roadworks, which include a 40mph speed restrictions and  temporary average speed cameras, are expected to remain until 10 July.

Elsewhere the agency plans to clear around 75% current UK roadworks during the long weekend in an attempt to limit the effects of the heavy holiday traffic.

Simon Sheldon-Wilson, director of traffic management at the agency, said: "To help road users enjoy this bank holiday weekend – and hopefully some fine weather – we will be completing or suspending over 320 miles of road works on motorways and major trunk roads.

“But we still ask people to plan their journeys by making use of the traffic information services we provide."

In all, 66 sets of roadworks are due to be completed on the Highways Agency’s roads ahead of the bank holiday weekend, with a further 47 sets of road works and lane restrictions to be removed  between 6am on Friday 23 May and 12.01am on Tuesday 27 May.

Among them are the works on the A30 Monkton (near Honiton) which are expected to be completed in time for the bank holiday.

The news is also good for those leaving Devon this weekend as works on the M32 J1 near Bristol and the A46 at the M4 J18 roundabout (near Bath) are both to be lifted until Tuesday, making travel out of the South West easier.

The Agency say that Friday evening and Saturday afternoon are expected to be the busiest times, especially on the main holiday routes, as people take day trips, short breaks or longer holidays for the half term break.

Highways Agency traffic officers will be visible on the motorways and on standby to deal with any incidents and keep traffic moving so disruption is kept to a minimum.

The Highways Agency provides information services to help people check traffic conditions for the motorways and other strategic roads.

Live traffic information is available through the Highways Agency’s website, local and national radio travel bulletins, electronic road signs and mobile apps.

Road users can also call the Highways Agency Information Line (0300 123 5000) to keep up to date with road conditions.
