A new leaflet of walks in and around the Avocet Line from Exeter to Exmouth has been launched.

Called “Avocet Ambles 3”, the free leaflet has been produced by the Avocet Line Rail Users’ Group with the help from the Devon and Cornwall Rail Partnership and brings together a selection of three self-guided walks, all starting from and ending at Avocet Line railway stations. Included are walks from Digby and Sowton, Newcourt and Topsham stations, all devised by members of the Rail Users’ Group committee.

Funding for the leaflet has also come from the Designated Community Rail Development Fund, backed by the Department for Transport, the Association of Community Rail Partnerships and Network Rail.

Highlighting walks from branch stations is part of the promotional campaign being run for the line by the Devon & Cornwall Rail Partnership working closely with the Avocet Line Rail Users’ Group.

Extra trains are now running on Sundays between Exeter Central and Exmouth, making it easier for passengers to have a Sunday day trip to the Exe Estuary. Trains now run every half hour through most of the day throughout the year. All trains call at Digby & Sowton, Newcourt, Topsham and Lympstone Village stations.

Celia Minoughan, the Partnership’s Avocet Line Project Officer said “The leaflet is a great companion for people who like exploring Exeter and East Devon and there are some fabulous walks to explore along the Avocet Line.  This selection is just a taster of what is out there, more walks can be found on the Avocet Line Rail Users’ Group website www.avocetline.org.uk

Mike Reddaway from the Avocet Line Rail Users Group said:  “We’re delighted to produce a third Ambles leaflet to guide people on interesting walks from our stations through wonderful countryside and townscapes.  Don’t forget to look behind you when walking – you might miss a beautiful view”

Avocet Ambles leaflets numbers 1, 2 and 3 can be found on the Avocet Line Rail Users Group website http://www.avocetline.org.uk/

Copies of the “Avocet Ambles 3” leaflet can be found at Exmouth, Exeter Central and St Davids stations as well as local tourist information centres and libraries.
