The Devon & Cornwall Food Association takes in-date food destined for landfill or incineration and redistributes it to community organisations and local charities in the two counties, though not direct to the public. It operates from two hubs in Exeter and Plymouth and provides a social, economic and environmental service on a voluntary basis.

The DCFA is proud to have been one of the three finalists at the Environment Agency’s national Project Excellence Awards 2013 held on Tuesday 9 July 2013 in Birmingham, having reached the finals of this nation-wide Award in Category 2 and its focus on ‘Partnerships and Sustainability’.

Devised as a means to recognise the excellent project work undertaken on behalf of the Environment Agency by its Framework Contractors, Consultants and by its own staff, the Project Excellence Awards invited nominations from teams across the UK. So it was indeed a great honour for DCFA to be recognised for this great achievement.

David Rooke, one of the six judges said:  “The breadth and depth of talent within the Environment Agency, our partners and supply chain manifested itself in the excellent projects we had the pleasure to judge. The Project Excellence Awards are a great occasion to showcase our work to leaders in the industry. The shortlisted projects were all worthy of a prize. My congratulations to all the teams that took part and particularly to the winners and highly commended. We raised the benchmark yet again.”

The work of the DCFA was shortlisted from a list of nearly 90 entries nation-wide and was delighted with the outcome.

DCFA Exeter Secretary Martyn Goss said “This is a great credit to the project and to all those involved, given it was up against many high-profile projects nationwide.

It should also be borne in mind that the distinguished panel of the judges had a strong engineering background so this speaks very well for DCFA being recognised for its achievements. We are absolutely delighted to have been able to put DCFA on the map nationally… where it belongs!”
