Essential investigations at Mamhead Slipway in Exmouth
Essential geotechnical and environmental investigations will be taking place around, and under, the Mamhead Slipway in Exmouth from Monday 2 December.
This investigation work is expected to last two to three weeks and is necessary as preparation for the longer term replacement or improvement of the slipway, a key project within the Exmouth Vision.
Engineers will drill boreholes through the slipway to gain information about the makeup of the geology beneath the seabed.
Trial trenches and shallow boreholes will also be opened in the Mamhead Gardens area to check the construction of the sea wall. These works will inform the design of the replacement slipway.
The area of Mamhead Gardens will be closed for the works, including the path at the rear of the sea wall. The sea area in the immediate vicinity of the Slipway will also be out of use.
Cllr Andrew Moulding, Deputy Leader of East Devon District Council and Chairman of the Exmouth Regeneration Programme Board, said: “We will, of course, keep any disturbance and disruption to a minimum. These works are essential as part of our long term aim of building a new and improved slipway for locals and visitors to use and enjoy the fantastic estuary and beyond.”
Mamhead Slipway was closed in August 2012 for safety reasons. Funding from the sale of Elizabeth Hall is supporting the development of a new, improved slipway at Mamhead as part of the Exmouth Vision to establish the town as a 21st Century destination fit for visitors, residents and businesses.
