Exeter Carnival: Call out for volunteer stewards

Following the exciting news of the return of Exeter Carnival after 24 years, InExeter - the Business Improvement District behind the new carnival - are calling out for volunteer stewards to help at the event

The Exeter Carnival will take place on Saturday 26th November 2022 with the illuminated parade starting at 6pm. The carnival will travel through the city and will celebrate the community of Exeter.

The news of the return of Exeter Carnival was met positively by the public with over 9,600 people responding to the Facebook event.

Ann Hunter BID Manager at InExeter says, “Carnival’s around the South West are events where the whole community comes together and Exeter will be no exception. We are calling out for volunteers to be part of Exeter Carnival and delivering this event to the city of Exeter.”

InExeter are keen to hear from anyone who would like to volunteer to be a Carnival Route Steward. The role will involve being on the carnival route, monitoring the crowds, making sure spectators stay on the pavements and watch at a safe distance as the parade travels through. All volunteers should be welcoming and approachable – they will be the face of the carnival for those who have come to watch and will be the first point of call should someone in the crowd need anything.

Marina O’Shea Events Manager comments: “The Carnival Route Stewards will pay an integral role in the carnival, they will be the face of the carnival, on the frontline, interacting with the public. Volunteers who take part will not only be able to say that they were part of bringing back the carnival to Exeter but will also gain volunteering experience at a large-scale event, work as a team and be part of making this event happen.”

All volunteers will need to be aged over 18, have the confidence to speak loudly and must be prepared for all weathers. No previous event experience is required – the main qualities needed are the ability to listen and take instruction, be welcoming and have common sense. If individuals do have volunteering and event experience, please do highlight on application as Route Steward Leaders for specific areas are also required.

The Exeter Carnival Route Steward roles are unpaid, but all will be provided with a hot dinner and refreshments on the evening. The role will include a briefing on the day with volunteers arriving at 4pm and finishing at approximately 9pm. Route Steward Leaders will be invited to a briefing ahead of the day also.

Anyone wishing to apply to be a volunteer should email info@inexeter.com confirming they are over 18, why they wish to be a volunteer and listing any previous experience if applicable.
