Express & Echo & SunGift illuminate Exeter this Christmas
The Express & Echo has announced that it is to team up with Marsh Barton-based Sungift Solar to shed some much-needed festive illuminations on Exeter's High Street this Christmas.
Following the announcement in summer that there would be no main Christmas lights display for the city, many were questioning whether a knight in shining armour would step in like last year, when South West Communications and Exeter Chiefs Chairman Tony Rowe funded the High Streets lights.
However, it was announced today that the Echo is providing funding for the lights, while SunGift Solar is donating its time and expertise to putting them up.
Echo editor Andy Phelan said: "Christmas just would not be Christmas without the lights in Exeter High Street.
"We believe this will help not just the larger retailers but also the small independents by attracting more people to shop in our fantastic city."
Councillor Rosie Denham, member for economy and tourism, said: "The decision by the Echo – supported by SunGift Solar – to sponsor the Christmas lights is fantastic news."
John Harvey, city centre manager, said: "It's excellent news that we have secured external funding for the High Street Christmas lights this year."
