Halloween Poll Reveals Devon Top Scares
A survey has revealed that people in Devon rank horror movies as their number one fright.
The Heart of Devon Tourism Partnership carried out the poll, asking people in Exeter and online at heartofdevon.com what scared them most at Halloween.
Horror movies came out top, with 13% of people citing scary flicks as their biggest fear. Second was spiders, named by 12% of people and joint third was trick or treaters and the mask from the movie Scream, each receiving 6% of the poll.
Other fears highlighted included ghosts, being alone in the dark and scary novels, while 4% of people said nothing frightened them.
Heart of Devon chairman Derek Philips said the tourism partnership’s members were working hard to offer a range of spooky experiences for all ages this Halloween.
He said: “From Shriek Week at Powderham Castle to the Mexican Night of the Dead at Exeter Phoenix, we hope there’s something for everyone this half-term Halloween. I’m not surprised that horror movies still scare people – I’m sure a lot of fears are deep-rooted in our psyche.”
Carried out between 17 and 28 October, some 105 people took part in the Heart of Devon poll.
Players at Exeter City and Exeter Chiefs were also asked what scared them most at Halloween as part of the survey. Exeter City players’ number one fright was revealed as spiders, while clowns came top amongst the Exeter Chiefs players polled.
Three Exeter Chiefs also took part in a Halloween makeover to support Heart of Devon Halloween, with prop Lloyd Fairbrother, fullback Jack Nowells and hooker Luke Cowandickie donning costumes supplied by Exeter’s Mainline Fancy Dress Shop in Sidwell Street. A video of their transformation into ‘horror characters’ is available by clicking here.
