Hospiscare Sahara Trek 2014
A group of intrepid Devonians are about to embark on a journey of a lifetime in the Hospiscare Sahara Trek 2014.
Twenty two walkers will be leaving Exeter at midnight on November 5 heading for a London flight to Marrakech. They will trek across the Sahara to raise thousands of pounds for Hospiscare, the local Exeter based charity which every year helps more than 2,000 local people and their families living with a terminal illness.
“We will be accompanied by the local Berber guides and camels will carry our food, water and tents,” said Celia Wilkinson, Hospiscare running and challenge fundraiser. “Every day we will walk an average of 20 km and will camp in tents in one of the most baron parts of the world. Temperatures during the day will average 40 degrees and drop to zero at night.
“The landscape is vast and diverse and we will find sand dune fields, rugged stony ground, dried up river beds, large rocky outcrops and even some wide gushing rivers! A highlight will be spending the evenings stargazing.”
The walkers are a mixture of Hospiscare supporters, from local businesses and people wanting a taste of adventure.
