Housebuilder offers tips for an environmentally-friendly move

If you’re moving to a new house, you probably already have a long list of things to do, but have you thought about how you can make your move environmentally-friendly?

With all the boxes, packing material and vehicle emissions used in the moving process, it’s not usually thought of as being good for the environment, but, to mark Recycle Week, which runs from September 24th-30th, five star housebuilder, David Wilson Homes, is offering a few tips to help you be as eco-friendly as possible.

• Have a clear out before you move. Many removal companies charge based on the weight and size of your possessions – less stuff will save money and may mean a smaller removal van.
• Think about your transport. Look for removal companies which are at EEV (Enhanced Environmentally-friendly Vehicles) Standard, which promotes vehicles with low-emissions.
• Give your discarded items a new home. Instead of binning your unwanted items, pass them on to family and friends, charity shops and schools. This will reduce landfill as well as decreasing the number of new items bought.
• Clever packing. Use empty drawers, suitcases or travel bags to transport as many of your items as you can to save on the need for boxes and tape. Clothing, towels or old newspapers and magazines also make for great packing material.
• Use ‘green’ cleaning products. For your pre-move clean, consider using natural or more eco-friendly products.
