Local pest controller shares 3 tips on how to get rid of rodents
If you're dealing with a rodent infestation, it can be tough to know where to start. But don't worry - help is at hand! We spoke to Warren from Smyth Pest Control, who shared his top three tips on how to get rid of rodents:
1. Block up any entry points
Rodents can squeeze through surprisingly small spaces, so it's important to block up any potential entry points into your home. This could include gaps in doors or windows, or holes in walls. If you're having problems with squirrels, make sure to check your roof for any potential access points.
Out of rats, mice and squirrels, squirrels are the most difficult to keep out, as they can climb and jump quite easily. They're hands-down the smartest of the three and can fit through impossibly small spaces. If you think you have a squirrel problem, it's no-doubt best to call in a professional who will have dealt with them before.
Rodents like all the same things that humans do - food, water, shelter and warmth. If you can eliminate their access to these things, they'll be less likely to stick around.
2. Eliminate food sources
On a similar note, rodents are attracted to food, so make sure you remove or protect anything that could be enticing them into or near your home. This includes food waste bins, pet food, and even fruit trees. Pro-tip: make sure your compost bin is sealed tight.
If you're providing rodents with an easy food source, they're going to keep coming back for more. So, it's important to make sure that your food is stored away securely. This means keeping things like cereals, biscuits and pasta in sealed containers, and making sure that any waste food is disposed of properly.
Rodents have been known to eat out of bird-feeders, particularly with nuts, so make sure to protect these and make sure to not spill anything when you're filling them up if you don't want any furry visitors.
Rodents simply won't stay where there isn't any food. So, by eliminating their food sources, you can make your home much less appealing to them.
3. Set some traps and poison
If you have a rodent problem, the best way to get rid of them is to set some traps and use poison. There are off-the-shelf solutions out there, but a pest controller will always have access to the most effective solutions.
There's no one-size-fits-all answer when it comes to getting rid of rodents, but following these three tips should help you make your home much less appealing to them.
If you're struggling to get rid of rodents, it's always best to call in the professionals. A pest controller will be able to advise you on the best course of action and get rid of your rodent problem quickly and effectively.
If you call in a pest-controller to help, make sure to get one with BPCA-certification. This will ensure that you know they have the knowledge and experience to get the job done properly.
