New Exeter home for environmental arts organisation
At the end of March 2013, the Centre for Contemporary Art and the Natural World (CCANW) will move its operation from Haldon Forest Park to the Innovation Centre on the University of Exeter campus.
From its formation in 2006, CCANW has built an international reputation for engaging the public with environmental issues through new art.
Delivered both in its forest and in spaces across Devon, CCANW’s cutting edge shows have ranged from a focus on timber in architecture to eco-fashion. These have reached around 300,000 visitors over its seven years of operation.
Commenting on the move, chair of CCANW, Tristram Besterman said: “The move to Exeter opens an exciting new chapter for CCANW and will enable it to reach new audiences.
“At Haldon Forest we enjoy a good relationship with the Forestry Commission but by moving into Exeter and working with the University we can also play a useful part in the wider community.
“I warmly welcome the move and look forward to making the most of the fresh opportunities it will provide.”
Director of CCANW, Clive Adams added: “Because CCANW works naturally across disciplines, on campus it can further develop creative links between the arts and sciences and between cultural studies, design and environmental organisations in the South West, the UK and abroad.
“CCANW’s programmes will widen the portal between the university and the town. So the move is a real win-win for the public, for students, for academics and – as has always been our mission – for art and for the environment, too.”
Louise Bell, Haldon Forest Park Manager says: “Having CCANW at Haldon Forest Park has offered our visitors something different to enjoy when they are visiting the forest.
“They held many fantastic exhibitions and led educational events and built up a core following. We wish them well in their new premises and will maintain our links with them through future events and exhibitions.
“We are now looking at options for the future of the building CCANW are leaving and will communicate our intentions for this in the near future.”
Speaking from the University, Dom Jinks, Head of Arts and Culture Services, saidL “We are delighted to hear that CCANW will be joining us at our Streatham Campus.
"At a time that the Arts & Culture offer is growing and liberal arts subjects are being introduced it will be valuable to have a practice-based organisation with experience and knowledge in education, research and professional arts projects.
"We look forward to building an innovative relationship between the University of Exeter and CCANW.”
