Olympics-inspired Disability Sports Festival in Exeter
CEDA is running a disability sports festival inspired by the Rio Olympics, and in anticipation of the Paralympic Games.
The event will offer disabled people the opportunity to try some of the most popular athletic events including throwing, running, wheelchair racing and jumping.
CEDA, a charity who work with disabled people in Devon, are working in partnership with the South West Athletics Academy to put on the festival at Exeter Arena.
Craig Bowden, CEDA’s Activity Hub Manager said: “A lot of our members have been inspired by the Rio Olympics and want to have a go at the kinds of sports they have seen on TV.
"At CEDA we create the opportunities that our members may not otherwise have, and we’re inviting other people to join us so that they can try the sports too.”
CEDA member Justin Holmes said: "I saw the Olympics on TV and wondered if I ever could do what the athletes were doing and now I can give it a go despite being in a wheelchair. I can't wait!
Sonya Ellis from South West Athletics Academy said: “We are excited to promote this event as we believe strongly in inclusive sport. I have coached a number of athletes from grassroots level to GB level and had a few represent their country.
"We wanted to do an event that encouraged anyone of any ability and whatever their background to come and have a go at the wide range of events we cover in athletics as a sport, but also encourage their friends and family to take part too.
“Athletics is such a varied sport from running, or wheeling to jumping and throwing and most events can be adapted to suit. We promote fun and enjoyable training and support everyone to reach their full potential.”
The Disability Sports Festival is aimed at disabled people and those with additional needs. Most events are adaptable for all abilities.
The event takes place at Exeter Arena on Wednesday 31 August. Gates open at 10am with events running between 10.30am and 3pm.
