Roman road restored at Redrow’s Romansfield development

A local groundworker has reconstructed an original Roman road at Redrow’s Romansfield development in Okehampton, Devon.

In 2018, archaeologists from independent commercial consultancy AC archaeology working with Redrow on the development before its launch discovered what they thought to be the most south-westerly Roman town in Britain.

The local archaeologists found the foundation trenches and post-holes of some 25 timber-constructed buildings situated either side of a well-preserved Roman road extending eastwards from a military fort.

Ahead of the opening of Romansfield earlier this year, groundworker supervisor Phillip Lang from Roadform Civil Engineering took on the challenge of reconstructing the archaeological walkway using original stones. Phillip has a personal interest in historic ruins and utilised his own knowledge of Roman roads and prior research to complete the project.

Phillip said: “We frequently work with Redrow Homes, but this kind of undertaking doesn’t come up too often! It was a real labour of love for me for many reasons.

“On my holidays I often enjoy exploring archaeological sites and historic finds, and so to be able to work on a restoration project like this, handling the original stones and reconstructing a Roman road myself was a privilege.”

Romansfield features a variety of two and four-bedroom homes from Redrow’s Heritage Collection which takes inspiration from the soft colour palettes and traditional structures of the Arts and Crafts movement of the 1930s.

The next phase of properties will add a number of three-bedroom house types and the development is set to comprise 73 homes when complete.

Romansfield is within easy reach of Exeter, Plymouth and the beautiful Dartmoor National Park, providing potential homebuyers with the best of both rural and city living.
