Second Sunday Volunteering: Helping the butterflies of Haytor Down
Brighten up a dull February by join Assistant Ranger Stuart and Conservation Apprentice Leo as they carry out habitat management for the beautiful Pearl Bordered and Small Pearl Bordered Butterfly on Haytor Down.
The Pearl Bordered is a particularly fussy client in its demand for a ‘well-balanced’ bracken environment, requiring bracken for wind shelter and warmth, whilst simultaneously requiring clearer patches to facilitate the growth of dog violets – its main food and egg laying plant.
The techniques we will be using to manage the site are quite basic - a lot can be achieved with sticks and a stout walking boot! It will be a fun session with the potential of a follow-up task later in the year.
The work will take place on Sunday 10 February, starting from Haytor Visitor Centre at 10:30am and finishing before 3pm. Tea and biscuits provided, but please bring a packed lunch.
There is a short walk to the site. Suitable footwear, waterproofs and warm clothing are a must. As always, be prepared for some interesting weather!
If you are interested in coming along, please email Assistant Ranger Stuart at shooppell@dartmoor.gov.uk. Booking is essential as tools and equipment need to be organised.
