Sports Club among good causes benefitting from Community Lottery

An all-action sports club that attracts members ranging from ten years old to 52 is just one of more than 120 good causes in Exeter that are benefitting from ticket sales for a community lottery.

Exeter City Ultimate Frisbee likes nothing better than to let fly with a perfectly propelled disc.

Yet the club, which began in 2019, is always looking for ways to raise funds to keep the club going.

So when Exeter Community Lottery started out in 2023, the Club jumped at the chance to get involved.

When people play the weekly lottery they have a chance to choose which good cause to support. Fifty pence in every pound then goes to that cause, with 10p going towards rge Exeter Central Fund. The rest of the money pays for prizes and the administration of the lottery.

Players of the lottery can also choose to nominate the money to a central fund which will support funding to groups throughout the city as part of the grants programme.

So far good causes in Exeter have benefitted from thousands of pounds in funding from ticket sales.

Jamie Banks, of Exeter City Ultimate Frisbee, said the Lottery helped them purchase equipment, pitch maintenance and promote the Club. “Not only have we benefited from the ticket sales and money coming in this way, some of our players have won prizes one of them £250!”

City Ultimate Frisbee was started with the aim of becoming an entry level club that could feed into the elite Devon Ultimate team.

The Club has proved popular with up to 60 members involved in training, matches and tournaments.   In September the Club host the Ooo Devon is a Place on Earth one day tournament with teams coming from all over the South West.

Cllr Matt Vizard, Lead Councillor with responsibility for Communities, said: “This is what the Exeter Community Lottery is all about – supporting good causes like Exeter City Ultimate Frisbee.

“When you buy a ticket you’re not only giving yourself a chance of winning prizes, you’re also helping community groups and organisations to thrive in this great city.”

Tickets cost just £1 and players have a one in 50n chance of winning a prize. Draws take place every Saturday with ticket holders in with a chance of scooping the top prize of £25,000.
