The Swan Christmas quiz raises £1,000 for charity

EGGHEADS from Devon helped raised more than £1,000 for a charity in the county at a Christmas quiz night held at an award-winning pub (December 2022).

The Swan in Bampton hosted the event in aid of the Churches Housing Action Team (CHAT) and quizzers helped raise £1,032 for the good cause.

Chef-patron Paul Berry, who co-owns the gastropub with his wife and fellow award-winning chef Donna, says: “Our annual Christmas quiz night is always a bit special and this year we were raising funds for CHAT, which tackles homelessness in the area.

“Through quiz entry sales and a raffle on the night, we are thrilled to have raised £1,032 for the charity. We wouldn’t have been able to do it without the help of the companies from the area that helped sponsor the prizes for our raffle. These include RC construction, Frasers Antistatic, Bampton Fresh, Exmoor Rotary and our landlords, Simon, and Andrew.

“We’d like to say a huge ‘thank you’ to all of our customers for coming along and joining in the fun and we are planning to host another quiz night in January, which we hope lots of people will come along to.”

CHAT has been working since 1995 to tackle homelessness, help people avoid evictions and bring hope to the communities of mid-Devon. All of its services are provided free of charge by a dedicated team of trained staff, supported by knowledgeable volunteers.

It believes everyone is entitled to decent, secure and affordable housing.

The Swan retained its AA Gold Stars and Rosette award for the sixth year running this year. It also reached number 25 in the 2022 ‘Estrella Damm’ Top 50 Gastropub Awards. Alongside its sister restaurant, Spelt, it was also featured in the 2021 Michelin Guide and was named by the AA as the nation’s ‘Inn of the Year’ in 2019.

The Swan was named Gold Tourism Pub of the Year 2018 at the South West Tourism Excellence Awards and was voted Best Dining Pub for 2018 in the Trencherman Awards.

Donna was also one of three finalists in the Devon Life and Trencherman Awards in 2018.
