Work stars on new Jurassic themed adventure golf course
East Devon District Council has begun work on a new Jurassic themed artificial nine-hole adventure golf facility next to the play area at Seafield Gardens in Seaton.
The new mini golf course, which will be used by both local residents and visitors to Seaton, is being funded by money collected by the council from developers for new homes they have created in Seaton. The council chooses to let the local community decide how to spend this money. The adventure golf course was the most popular choice among a range of suggestions put forward and voted on by the local community. The total cost of the scheme is £71,500.
Construction of the golf course, which is replacing an existing grass putting facility, began on Monday 19 September and should be completed by the end of October 2016.
The course’s eye-catching design features plenty of fun Jurassic themed course decorations and timber or stone obstacles, in the shape of stone fossils, dinosaur bones, dinosaur eggs, rocks/boulders and fossil style edging of the golfing areas.
LED Leisure Management will manage and maintain the facility once the course has been built.
Councillor Iain Chubb, East Devon District Council’s portfolio holder for the environment, said: “This new Jurassic themed golf course will tie in superbly with Seaton Jurassic and will further strengthen the town’s visitor attractions offer. From what I have seen of the designs for the facility, it is going to be a very striking and stylish golfing amenity, offering lots of fun and visual interest.
"Seaton, which is within the Jurassic Coast World Heritage site, has done well to get this installed so close behind Seaton Jurassic’s opening and I am sure it will be a great success when it opens next year. It’s a terrific amenity and I’m not surprised that it was the local community’s favourite choice.”
Marcus Allen, Area Manager at LED Leisure Management, said: “LED is looking forward to the adventure golf opening next spring. We hope that the course will be a big hit with both local residents and visitors to the town. The dinosaur theme ties in well with the Jurassic Coast, and we hope that it will encourage people to visit some of the wonderful gardens at the western end of Seaton seafront.”
