January sales: Dashcams
Dashcams are handy tools. They provide an extra layer of protection for you and your vehicle by recording the questionable actions of your fellow motorists. If you’re involved in an accident that wasn’t your fault, your dashcam will have irrefutable proof of your innocence, making it easier for you to make an insurance claim or mount a successful court case.
They’re easy to fit into older used cars, too. Most come with a stick-on mount that you attach behind your rear-view mirror. Then it’s a simple case of running the cable down to your cigarette lighter to get some power to keep the camera rolling. Easy.
Fitting a dashcam can also help to reduce your insurance premiums. Some insurers offer discounts for drivers that use them – and in the unfortunate event that you’d need to reference the footage, it could make it easier to cling onto your no claims bonus, helping to keep your premiums low well into the future.
Now’s a good time to buy a dashcam, too. The New Year has just rolled past, which means there are plenty of dashcams available with hefty January sales discounts. We’ve scoured the market to find the best-value dashcams that offer the highest quality for the lowest price. Scroll down for our pick of the current line-up.
Orskey S680 – RRP £39.99
The S680 is reliable, powerful and simple to use. It even has the same three-inch screen you’ll find on the most expensive Nextbase dashcams, which is an impressive addition considering its price.
It records in 1080p at 30fps, which makes it easy to recognise other cars’ licence plates or the faces of other drivers – and it has six infrared LEDs around the lens to improve recording quality at night. Lastly, it features a 170-degree wide-angle lens (which is 30 degrees wider than you’ll find on a Nextbase dashcam), allowing for a more panoramic view of the car’s surroundings.
Orskey CameraCore S900 Bundle – RRP £51.99
What’s better than one dashcam? Two dashcams, of course. The forward camera in this bundle is very similar to the S680, although it does without the fancy infrared LEDs. However, you get an extra waterproof camera for your rear bumper that allows you to monitor the traffic behind, too.
This is very handy if you’re rear-ended by an inattentive motorist. The front camera also features a clever Sony sensor with excellent low-light recording capability to make up for the missing LEDs – and Orskey has even thrown in a 32GB SD card.
Ring Automotive RSDC3000 Smart Dashcam – £66.99
The RSDC3000 is the best-value dashcam with GPS on sale right now. And we reckon it’s well worth opting for a dashcam with GPS because it adds an extra layer of security, providing the location of an incident and data like the speed at which you were travelling.
Ring Automotive’s effort has a slightly better-quality camera than the Orskey units, recording in 1296p. The lens has a shallower angle at just 130 degrees, but extras like Wi-Fi connectivity and a G-sensor help to make up for that shortcoming.
Iiwey S3-4K WiFi Dashcam – RRP £79.99
The S3-4K is quite a bit more expensive than the Orskey S680. However, it records 4K video, which is far clearer than 1080p. It also strikes a keen balance between value and quality rather than sacrificing one for the other.
You get plenty of tech for your money, too. We’re talking 30fps recording speeds, a 170-degree wide-angle lens, loop recording, GPS tracking and Wi-Fi connectivity. It even has the same sort of Sony night vision sensor as the Orskey units and a three-inch touchscreen.
