Euro 2024 is finally in the books, with Spain scoring a dramatic late winner against England to become the first nation to win the men’s European Championship four times. It was another thrilling tournament right from the beginning, with many impressive moments and statistics to reflect on. Keep reading to find out more.

The Fastest Goal

There is nothing quite like a quick goal to ignite a match. In this year’s competition, the fastest goal in Euros history was scored when Nedim Bajrami of Albania stunned Italy by scoring just 23 seconds after kickoff. Celebrations were short-lived, though, when Italy fired back twice within 16 minutes to take the lead and go on to win the game.

The Competition’s Youngest Captain

Captaining a national team is a great privilege, normally reserved for the most senior players of the team. This year’s competition saw the youngest player to captain their national team when Hungary’s Dominic Szoboszlai was given the armband in the absence of their regular captain. At just 23 years old, Liverpool midfielder Szoboszlai was entrusted to lead his team showing his leadership qualities and importance to the team’s morale. This is why Szoboszlai is beloved at Liverpool, and it is likely that there will be a very bright future ahead for him at Liverpool FC.

The Euro’s Youngest Ever Player

Spain and Barcelona’s Lamine Yamal was the breakout star of the Euros, setting the record for being the youngest player in the European championship at just 16 years and 338 days. Yamal did not let his inexperience hold him back as he went on to star in the competition, including scoring arguably the goal of the tournament in the semi-finals against France with a stunning curling effort from outside the box.

Oldest Ever Goalscorer

Lamine Yamal certainly announced himself on the world stage, while Luka Modric potentially bowed out in fine style by becoming the oldest-ever player to score at the Euros. The legendary Croatia and Real Madrid midfielder netted against Italy at 38 years and 289 days. There has been a lot of speculation about Madrid’s future, but his legacy is in no doubt whether this is his final tournament or not.

Oldest Ever Euro’s Player

Another legendary player approaching the end of his highly successful career is Portugal’s Pepe, who became the oldest player at the Euros at 41 years and 117 days. This makes him almost 25 years older than Yamal!

These are a few of the best statistics from this year’s Euros - another incredible competition showcasing the best talent from all over Europe. There were incredible goals scored, young players announcing themselves to the world, and players coming towards the end of their international careers bowing out in style. Spain emerged as deserved winners, but there were many other interesting stories and developments that will keep people talking about the competition for months and years to come.
